Microsoft Office Student Discount: Free Web or Desktop?

Eligible students can get Office 365 A1 web apps free; Microsoft separately advertises 50% off Microsoft 365 Personal for verified college students. Free A1 does not promise the Word, Excel and PowerPoint desktop apps. Check your school's actual license before paying for a personal subscription. Education plans, student offer. Verified October 16, 2026.

Sources: education plans, student offer, regular plan comparison, Office Home and free web apps. Published prices are not account-specific checkout totals; applicable tax can change the bill.

Price limitation: the student page displayed its 50% headline, but the dollar amount appeared as placeholder dots in both our browser and the retrieved public page. Its signup link led to Microsoft sign-in. We did not verify a checkout amount or a free introductory period. Older prices and promotional articles are not substituted for a current quote. The advertised discount is real published wording; the exact charge still needs checking before purchase.

A missing Install button can be a license question

Microsoft's education comparison describes A1 as web-based and A3 as adding full desktop Office access. A school email can establish an education identity without proving that your institution assigned a desktop entitlement. Ask campus IT which plan and desktop rights your account actually has. Education comparison. Verified October 16, 2026.

Separate three observations: you can sign in, you can edit in a browser, and you can activate the desktop application. Passing the first two does not establish the third. Reinstalling the same application is not a substitute for confirming the license. Conversely, do not buy Personal merely because an old walkthrough has a different menu from the one you see.

Use the course requirement as the test. If browser editing meets it, the free route may already solve the problem. If the assignment requires a particular installed application, confirm that entitlement explicitly. A screenshot of Word running in a browser is not evidence of an offline desktop license.

The free personal web service is another route when your school does not qualify. Microsoft lists Word, Excel and PowerPoint for the web and 5 GB of personal OneDrive storage. Its collaboration footnote requires files to be saved in and shared from OneDrive. Free web service. Verified October 16, 2026.

Compare the student quote with a complete purchase

Let P be the monthly student amount actually offered to you, before tax. Leave it unfilled until confirmed. The current comparison uses H = $179.99, the official U.S. Office Home 2024 price, checked October 16, 2026. It does not use an older launch price.

Fully paid months you needStudent subscription spending at unchanged POffice Home cash purchaseMonthly quote at which the cash totals are equal
Twelve12 × P$179.99$179.99 ÷ 12 ≈ $15.00
Twenty-four24 × P$179.99$179.99 ÷ 24 ≈ $7.50
Thirty-six36 × P$179.99$179.99 ÷ 36 ≈ $5.00
Forty-eight48 × P$179.99$179.99 ÷ 48 ≈ $3.75

Formula: equal-cost monthly quote = H ÷ paid months. These are our calculated thresholds, not Microsoft subscription prices. Use the unrounded division for a decision near the boundary: the rounded $5.00 label in the thirty-six-month row does not imply that 36 × $5.00 equals $179.99. It equals $180.00, one cent more.

The table compares cash for different products, not identical benefits. Office Home does not purchase the subscription's cloud-storage and AI package. Personal does not become a permanently owned Office Home license after enough payments. First rule out routes that cannot do your coursework; compare the remaining costs afterward.

Count only the fully paid months you expect to need. Twelve months of enrollment do not automatically mean twelve paid subscription months, and a multi-year course does not guarantee the student rate for every future year. Do not insert a free year into this worksheet unless your own offer states that it applies.

Include the full-price period if eligibility ends

Microsoft's student FAQ says the discount depends on student verification within the last year and moves to the then-current full monthly price when eligibility is lost. Verified October 16, 2026. Student renewal conditions.

For a declared example with twelve student payments followed by twelve regular payments, use 12P + 12R, where R is the regular monthly rate that will apply. If R stayed at today's published $9.99, the regular portion would be $119.88. That leaves $60.11 of the $179.99 Home purchase price for the student portion: $179.99 − $119.88.

Under those assumptions, the two-year subscription cash total would be lower only if P < $60.11 ÷ 12, approximately $5.0092. This is a decision threshold derived from a public retail price and a public regular rate. It is not a student quote, a prediction of renewal pricing or a recommendation to purchase Home regardless of features.

Extend the same example to twelve student payments followed by twenty-four regular payments. The regular portion alone would be $239.76 at unchanged R: 24 × $9.99. It already exceeds $179.99 by $59.77, before adding 12P. That comparison cannot be repaired by describing the first year as “half price”; the later paid period is doing the work in the total.

There is also a useful zero-cost baseline. If your existing school entitlement already supplies every application you need for the entire period, a personal subscription adds spending to that coursework budget. A discount measured against regular Personal pricing is not money saved against a school license you would otherwise keep using for free. Personal ownership of the account or extra services may still matter, but name that benefit rather than inventing a software bill you avoided.

School files and personal billing are separate

The student Personal signup instructions use a personal Microsoft account, with school information used for verification. A school-managed education account follows a different access arrangement. Microsoft warns that education services associated with the institution email can stop after qualification ends. Personal offer, education expiry FAQ. Verified October 16, 2026.

Before replacing school access, identify where the actual document lives. Buying an app entitlement and moving a file are different operations. A successful personal subscription does not itself demonstrate that a document still stored in the school's workspace has moved into your personal storage.

For a document you are permitted to keep, test an independent copy: open it using the intended personal account or local application, make a small edit, save it and reopen it. That checks the deliverable you need rather than merely checking that payment succeeded. Respect your institution's rules about which files may be retained.

Office Home is a purchase, not another student subscription

The Office Home 2024 listing includes classic Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for one PC or Mac, for non-commercial use. It requires internet for installation and activation; the installed apps can then be used offline. A later major release is a separate purchase rather than an included upgrade. Verified October 16, 2026.

Do not apply the general Microsoft Store device discount to this software price. The store's physical-product education program excludes Office and subscriptions; the separately advertised Personal student offer has its own terms. Store education exclusions. Verified October 16, 2026.

Resolve the entitlement before choosing a payment route: which account activates the required application, and where can you reopen your work? Then enter the actual student quote and the months you need into the worksheet. A familiar Office logo alone answers neither question.

How This Guide Was Researched

This guide checks Microsoft's U.S. education, student-offer, free-web and retail pages. The public student page did not render its dollar amount during this review, so the budget worksheets use a reader-confirmed price variable instead of an unverified student charge.
