Spotify Student Discount: Price, Pauses, and Renewal
Spotify Premium Student costs $6.99 per month in the U.S. and currently includes eligible Hulu access with ads. New Premium users may receive one month free. Students must reverify annually, for up to four years. Cancelling saves future subscription payments, but it does not freeze an already-started student discount year. Current price: compare the music subscription first
| Option | Listed monthly price before tax | What this comparison covers | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium Student | $6.99 | Personal student subscription; eligible Hulu benefit included | October 13, 2026 |
| Premium Individual | $12.99 | Regular personal music subscription baseline | October 13, 2026 |
| Eligible new-user Student trial | First month $0, then $6.99 | Introductory eligibility is separate from student qualification | October 13, 2026 |
Prices come from the student landing page. Its headline provides dollar prices rather than a music-only discount percentage. An unpublished percentage does not mean there is no discount. Our music-price calculation is ($12.99 − $6.99) ÷ $12.99 × 100 ≈ 46.2%. The $6 difference is a price gap, not a requirement to buy another product.
This comparison does not assign a cash value to Hulu. If you would not otherwise buy it, its separately advertised retail price is not money you personally saved. For a Hulu-focused choice, use our Hulu student guide rather than adding hypothetical TV spending to the music budget.
Cancelling does not bank unused discounted months
Spotify's terms define an annual student discount period as twelve consecutive months. Reactivation within that period restores only its remaining months, with the original end date. Verified October 13, 2026. Student-user duration and cancellation terms, section 2.3.2.
Consider an illustrative student year beginning in January and ending in December. You pay January through April, stop paying for May through August, and return for September through December. The calendar has advanced even while the subscription was inactive.
| Part of the illustrative year | Paid monthly cycles | Student-rate cost | Effect on the original period |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–April | 4 | $27.96 | Four calendar months have passed |
| May–August, inactive | 0 | $0 | Another four calendar months pass; they are not banked |
| September–December | 4 | $27.96 | Remaining four months of that original period |
| Total | 8 | $55.92 | Original period still ends in December |
Formula: 8 × $6.99 = $55.92. Staying subscribed for twelve paid cycles would cost 12 × $6.99 = $83.88, so the hypothetical cancellation saves $27.96 in payments ($83.88 − $55.92). It does not add four months to the qualification period. The example excludes tax, trials, partial-cycle adjustments and price changes, and assumes the account can reactivate at the same price.
This is the difference between cash saved and eligibility preserved. A subscription can be cheaper over a year because you paid for fewer months, while the next verification date stays exactly where it was. Calling those four inactive months “unused student credit” would combine two things that Spotify treats separately.
Use two lines in your own record: paid cycles and the discount end date. Recording only your last payment can make a September restart look like a new student year. Recording the original end date makes clear why renewal can still be due in December.
The budget mistake after returning
Extend the example through the following April. If you can renew eligibility at the original December endpoint, twelve active student payments across the sixteen-calendar-month scenario total $83.88. There are still only twelve paid cycles: four before the gap and eight afterward. This assumes renewed eligibility and unchanged pricing.
If you cannot renew and instead keep the applicable Individual plan for January through April, the same twelve active cycles cost $107.88: eight student payments ($55.92) plus four Individual payments ($51.96 = 4 × $12.99). The $24 difference is 4 × ($12.99 − $6.99). It is caused by the post-expiry price, not by a fee for taking a break.
That conditional comparison does not mean you should pay through months you do not use. Doing so would add $27.96 in the first example and would not solve lost eligibility. The decision is whether you want paid listening during the gap. The renewal decision is whether you still qualify when the original period ends.
Nor does four years of possible student access mean four years at a permanently fixed price. A long-horizon multiplication is useful only if its assumptions are explicit. At today's rate, 48 paid cycles would be $335.52 ($6.99 × 48). This is a scenario, not a prepaid offer, guaranteed maximum bill or promise that every student will qualify for all those periods.
For a shorter personal plan, count the paid cycles you intend to use inside each verified period and multiply by the price offered for that period. Keep future unverified years out of the committed total. If your course ends sooner, a theoretical four-year ceiling does not create eligibility you do not have.
Renewal: verification must reach the subscription
Spotify says renewal instructions arrive about four weeks before expiry. You can also renew from your account. If the discount has already expired, eligible students can reverify and resubscribe so the discounted rate applies to the next payment. Verified October 13, 2026. Renew Premium Student.
| What you have completed | What still needs checking | Verified |
|---|---|---|
| SheerID approved your enrollment | Return to Spotify and apply the Student subscription | October 13, 2026 |
| You renewed eligibility | Check the selected plan and next charge in the account | October 13, 2026 |
| You cancelled, then returned | Keep the original period's expiry unless the account confirms a new verified period | October 13, 2026 |

A verification confirmation and a discounted bill answer different questions. If the account still shows Individual, do not enter $6.99 in your budget simply because SheerID approved you. Follow the account's subscription steps first.
A full-price payment: quantify the discrepancy
At the verified inputs, the difference between Individual and Student is $6 per paid cycle. A full-price charge is therefore $6 above the student-rate scenario, not $12.99 of extra spending. The latter would incorrectly treat the whole bill as a penalty even though a correctly discounted month would still cost $6.99.
| Full-price cycles compared with otherwise identical student cycles | Additional cost at today's inputs |
|---|---|
| 1 | $6 |
| 2 | $12 |
| 4 | $24 |
Formula: k × ($12.99 − $6.99), where k is the number of full-price paid cycles. Both prices were verified October 13, 2026. This calculation establishes a budget gap only. Later student approval does not, by itself, establish that Spotify will refund an earlier charge.
When a receipt differs from your expectation, record the plan named on it, the paid period, the discount expiry and the amount. That gives support a billing question to inspect. Sending another enrollment document without identifying the paid plan may address the wrong step.
Qualification and payment boundaries
The U.S. offer names eligible Title IV colleges and universities and says users must be above age 18. SheerID verifies enrollment. Spotify's help page says your Spotify login email does not have to be your school email; an unlisted school is not currently eligible. Verified October 13, 2026. Student offer FAQ, setup and eligibility help.
An existing Spotify account can receive the discount after verification and subscription activation. Third-party or mobile-provider billing needs to be cancelled before re-signing with an eligible payment method. For study abroad, Spotify says the account country must match where you study and the payment method must be issued there. These rules do not make the U.S. price or Hulu benefit universal. Before restarting, recover the original discount end date. Before that date arrives, decide whether to reverify, change plans or stop paying. A break in listening can reduce your bill; it cannot turn a calendar deadline into a balance of unused months.
