Claude Code Student Discount: No Dedicated Discount, But Here's What Changed
Claude Code — Anthropic's terminal-based coding agent — doesn't have its own separate pricing or a student tier. It's billed through whatever Claude plan (or API account) you already have, and there's no confirmed individual student discount on that underlying plan either.
Quick Answer
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Dedicated Claude Code pricing | None — billed through your existing Claude Pro/Max/API plan |
| Individual student discount | Not confirmed on Anthropic's official pricing/education pages |
| Institution-based free access | Available if your university participates in Claude for Education |
| Recent change to watch | GitHub Student Pack's Claude access was reduced in March 2026 |
How Claude Code Is Actually Billed
Claude Code isn't purchased separately — it draws from the same usage budget as your regular Claude account. That means Pro ($20/month, or roughly $17/month effective on annual billing), Max ($100 or $200/month for higher usage), or pay-per-token through the Anthropic API. There is no free-standing Claude Code plan and no Claude-Code-specific student pricing tier on top of that.
The Real Student Paths (Same as Claude Generally)
As covered on our Claude student discount page, Anthropic doesn't publish an individual Claude Pro student discount. The two paths that do exist:
1. Claude for Education. If your university has a Claude for Education agreement, signing in with your school email can unlock premium features at no personal cost — but this depends entirely on your institution opting in, not something you can sign up for solo.
2. GitHub Student Developer Pack. This used to include access to Claude models (including Opus and Sonnet) through GitHub Copilot for verified students. As of March 2026, that access was reduced — Opus and Sonnet were removed from the free student offering, leaving only lighter models like Haiku available through Copilot's Auto mode. If you're relying on this path for serious Claude Code usage, check your current Copilot model access rather than assuming the older, more generous access still applies.
Savings Checklist
- Ask your university's IT department whether a Claude for Education agreement already exists before assuming you need to pay personally.
- If you're using Claude via GitHub Copilot's student access, verify which models you can currently reach — Opus/Sonnet access for students was reduced in March 2026.
- Compare Claude Code's Pro/Max tiers against your actual usage pattern; the 5-hour rolling usage window means a cheaper tier may be enough if you don't code in long continuous sessions.
- Consider API pay-per-token billing instead of a subscription if your usage is occasional rather than daily.
Compare Alternatives
For a more standardized student-verification path to an AI coding tool, see GitHub Copilot (via GitHub Student Developer Pack) or Cursor. For OpenAI's comparable terminal-based coding agent, see Codex CLI, which does have a specific (if narrowly scoped) student credit.

How We Verified This Page
Evidence checked: Claude Code, Claude Pricing, Claude for Education.
Current page conclusion: No student discount; billed through your Claude plan. This page uses 3 official sources to separate confirmed student benefits from institution-only access, third-party verification offers, discontinued programs, and coupon claims that are not backed by current official terms.
Decision factors: eligibility, verification route, renewal or expiration rules, country or school dependency, and whether an individual student can use the offer without a school-wide contract.
Student Verification Troubleshooting & Common Pitfalls
- If a school email does not receive a verification code, check spam, try the official student portal email alias, and confirm that the vendor accepts your school domain rather than only U.S. .edu addresses.
- When access depends on your school, ask the IT desk, library, or academic technology office whether the product is already licensed before paying for an individual subscription.
- If a coupon site claims a student price but the official page does not, treat the coupon claim as unverified. Check the vendor pricing page and your logged-in checkout before entering payment details.
- Before subscribing, check renewal timing and post-graduation rules. Some education offers end when verification lapses, while others renew at the normal public price.
- Keep screenshots or notes of the official terms you used when signing up, especially price, renewal date, eligibility language, and cancellation rules.
